Built from 1964, the BR 216 series was a single-engine mainline diesel locomotive designed for medium-duty service of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. The 214 locomotives were equipped with 1,400 kW MTU engines, reached speeds of 120 km/h, and were suitable for express and passenger trains, as well as freight trains thanks to the low-speed gear.
